COSMIC MUSIC: Exploring ALICE COLTRANE + ETERNITY’S PILLAR rare screening

An evening celebrating Andy Beta’s book COSMIC MUSIC: THE LIFE, ART, AND TRANSCENDENCE OF ALICE COLTRANE with conversation and screening
Presented as part of 7th House Screenings’ second annual See•Sound series, exploring films that illuminate groundbreaking, boundary-pushing, and culture-shifting music, we are delighted to return to the transcendent world of Alice Coltrane for this special evening inspired by the release of Andy Beta‘s acclaimed new book, COSMIC MUSIC: THE LIFE, ART, AND TRANSCENDECE OF ALICE COLTRANE—the first full-length biography of transformative musician, composer, harpist, and spiritual leader Alice Coltrane Turiyasangitananda. Pairing a conversation with the author and Coltrane’s close collaborators, Radha Botofasina and Baker Bigsby, with a rare screening of a previously unreleased episode of ETERNITY’S PILLAR, this special event offers a unique opportunity to experience Coltrane’s enduring artistic, spiritual, and cultural legacy through both firsthand conversation and one of her own visionary creations.
Drawing on years of research and scores of new interviews, Cosmic Music traces Coltrane’s remarkable evolution and visionary art, revealing the profound impact she continues to have on artists, musicians, and spiritual seekers across generations. Complementing Beta’s deeply researched perspective are the firsthand experiences of prominent spiritual musician Radha Botofasina, pianist, composer, and devoted student of Alice Coltrane who lived and worked alongside her at Sai Anantam Ashram, and renowned recording engineer Baker Bigsby, who served as the primary engineer and recordist for many of Coltrane’s recordings and has since helped preserve her musical legacy through the acclaimed World Spirituality Classics reissues. Together, their unique perspectives, combining meticulous scholarship and intimate lived experience, promise a rich and illuminating evening.
Rounding out the evening is a rare screening of a previously unreleased episode of Eternity’s Pillar, the self-produced mid-1980s television series originally created for Los Angeles’ KTTV Channel 11. Blending devotional music, meditation, spiritual teachings, and visionary video imagery, the series provides a deeply personal window into Coltrane’s own spiritual voice and the spirit of Sai Anantam Ashram. Presented here in its first theatrical screening, the episode offers audiences a rare chance to experience this singular series on the big screen.
After the event, join us for an afterparty DJ’d by Andy Beta at 1642 (at 1642 W Temple St), presented by The Loved One.
